When booking a hotel we suggest to pick up one in the downtown near Nevsky Prospect. They are several hotels in the outskirt of St Petersburg but traveling there by taxi (you may wish to stay out until late in the night to watch the opening of the bridges) can wipe up the savings you made in the room rate. Avoid hotels that are located on the other side of the river. If you stay in the downtown after 11 pm you will be cut off from traveling to your hotel since that bridge that you need to cross will be close to the traffic (and open to the navigation) for all the night (but most of them open to the traffic for a short 10 minutes break in the early hours of the morning).
